The technique I strongly encourage owners to use is Clicker training as it has been proven that dogs learn four times faster when using this technique as it marks very precisely when the dog has done what it has been asked and is then rewarded for doing so. A click tells a dog “Yes, you have done the right thing” and will therefore be rewarded for it.
I believe Clicker training is an excellent tool for helping dogs acquire new behaviors and refining behaviors that have already been taught. This method can also be valuable in modifying reactive or aggressive dog behaviors.
A frequently asked question of many of my clients is whether they need to carry the Clicker around for the duration of time that they have their dog. The answer to this is “No”. Through repetition, once your dog becomes more fluid at commands, the Clicker is no longer required. At this stage you can develop a verbal marker that you can use to reinforce to the dog they are doing the right thing and reward with praise or the occasional treat.
